We are book people through and through. My toddler loves to curl up on the couch, in a chair, or even on the floor and “read” her books or have us read to her. She’s got stacks and stacks of books, and her favorites change every so often.
So do ours. We might love a book, but after 412 readings of it within a week, we need a new favorite. That’s why we’re always keeping our eyes peeled for quality children’s books that we know she’ll love.
Very rarely do I buy a new book for myself, much less for my child. I know these books are going to well-loved, to put it gently, so we mostly look at consignment sales and thrift shops. Usually, the new books come at Christmas and her birthday, as gifts from family.
But when this book was released, I made my way to a Christian bookstore and bought it brand new the week after it came out. Why? Because I knew it was something special. I could feel it. That’s why I think it’s the one book every Christian family needs this Christmas.
Oh, and you know what the funniest part is? It’s not even a Christmas book! But it is so powerful that I truly believe this is the one that everyone needs.
It’s called Who Sang The First Song? and it’s written by Christian recording artist Ellie Holcomb.
You may be familiar with Ellie Holcomb’s music and not know that she wrote children’s books. That’s because up until now, she didn’t. But when her daughter asked her one day, “Mama, who sang the first song?”, God touched her heart and gave her this story.
I don’t know if I’ve ever cried at a children’s book (maybe God Gave Us You), but this one brings tears to my eyes every time. The biblical truths, beautiful illustrations, and spirit behind the book are evident on every page.
The book travels through the musings of who may have sang the first song in a beautifully written and illustrated lyrical tale. Was it the lion’s first roar? Or maybe the waves crashing against the shore? Or could it have been when the thunder went boom?
In the end, we see Who actually sang the first song and how He poured His song into everything He made. I won’t show you the whole book because you need to experience it for yourself, but I’ll close with this. If you buy one book this Christmas, let it be Who Sang The First Song? Your family needs it, I promise.
Have you read Who Sang The First Song? What’s one of your family’s must-have books?
