Selah was our little burrito baby. We used Velcro swaddles from a few days old until she was around 3 months. Every night we wrapped her up tightly and she slept great.

When it comes time to transition from a swaddle, it can be hard for babies to get quality sleep. But there's an easy way to make the transition without losing sleep!

When she grew out of her Velcro swaddles, we started using a Muslin blanket. It was breathable and gave her a little more wiggle room, but we could still swaddle her tightly and ensure that she would get quality sleep.

Then, it happened. One day, she started hating her swaddle. She didn’t like being restricted and she would fight her way out of it every night, waking herself up in the process. We knew it was time to transition from the swaddle, but when we tried to let her sleep in just pajamas, she woke herself up constantly.

We all needed sleep, so we had to find a solution.

Enter, the swaddle transition blanket

This was our saving grace. Once I realized the blanket wasn’t working anymore, I ordered one of these swaddle transition blankets. I was nervous to make the transition, but I bit the bullet and tried it one day.

Magic.

Selah slept just as well as she had in the swaddles, but she went to sleep happier and no longer fought it with all her strength.

Why do swaddle transition blankets work?

If you’ve been a mom for longer than 5 minutes, you’ve probably heard of the fourth trimester. The concept is that for the first 3 months of the baby’s life, they are transitioning from the womb to the “real world.” It’s a time of rapid growth and development during which they need the most care and attention.

Swaddling tends to help for the first 3 months because it mimics the closeness of the womb. As they move out of the fourth trimester, they want more freedom but most aren’t yet ready to sleep free.

That’s why swaddle transition blankets are effective. It slightly mimics the womb by providing some closeness, but also allows for wiggles and rolls.

What kind of swaddle transition blanket do I need?

Like another other baby product, there are countless options, and you may find that some work better for your baby than others. Nonetheless, all of these are recommended by real moms to help your baby transition well.

Zipadee Zip

This is the type of transition blanket we used. The baby is free to move around within the blanket, but the restriction provided by the enclosed arms and legs gives them that “snug as a bug” feeling that they still need to sleep well.

Love To Dream Swaddle Up

If you’ve ever laid your baby down and her arms went straight above her head, this one might be for you! You can zip off each of the “wings” individually, which makes the transition to sleeping free a little easier. Letting one arm out of the swaddle helps baby adjust to freedom little by little.

HALO Sleep Sack

The Halo Sleep Sack is designed to take the place of loose blankets in the crib. If your baby still needs the tightness of a swaddle, this may not work for you. However, if they just need the extra weight that the swaddle provides (like a blanket), this is a great solution!

Merlin’s Magic Sleep Suit

At first glance, this one seems a little silly, but I’ve been told it works wonders! This sleep suit should only be used until babies can roll over, but until then, it provides them with a warm (but breathable) and cozy environment which promotes sleep.

Nested Bean Zen Sack

Similar to the Halo Sleep Sack, this sleep sack gives babies much more freedom in regards to arm movement. However, the Nest Bean Zen Sack has a lightly weighted area on the center of the chest that mimics a parent’s touch, giving babies a sense of comfort and improving sleep.
