Whether your family is adding a new little member or it’s just time to upgrade, knowing what to look for in a family car can help you make the best decision!

Our main car is a red Chevy Sonic. It’s an awesome car and gets great gas mileage, but it’s not the best family car. So why do we drive it? Because I bought it 3 years ago, before I was even dating my now-husband, and it’s what we have.
With just one car seat, we can make the Sonic work. We could even fit another car seat, but after that, we’ll definitely need a bigger car, a family car.
My husband isn’t your typical car guy, but he’s big on research and finding out everything he can about a product before he buys it. That’s why I know he’ll use Cars.com to research different aspects of family cars before we buy one.
Here’s what he’ll look for in a family car:
Safety comes first, especially when you have kids! I want to make sure that my baby is protected all the time, but especially in the event of a crash. Cars.com includes crash-test reports, IIHS safety ratings, NHTSA safety ratings, and any recalls on each vehicle, so you can make sure that your little ones will be protected in your new ride!
Even if you’re not planning to have more kids, you need space to grow because your kids will get bigger. You also want to have enough cargo space in the trunk/back of vehicle to fit luggage, sports gear, or whatever your family may need. Make sure that you have room to grow in your new car!
Real Life Reviews
This is one of the things that’s most important to me. Listening to manufacturers is all well and good, but real people will tell you the real story. They’ll tell you the good, the bad, and the ugly!
I really like that Cars.com allows people to leave reviews on their site, so you can see exactly what REAL buyers think of the vehicle, not just what the “experts” have to say.
We’re young parents, I stay home with Selah, and Caleb is self-employed (which is great, but can be a struggle sometimes). We need our car to be affordable!
Nothing against car dealerships or car salesmen, but I like to know what the car is worth BEFORE I start shopping! Cars.com will tell you exactly what the car is worth, and the reviews will help you determine if it’s worth that price.
Both of our families live out of town, so around the holidays and birthday season, we do quite a bit of traveling. We also live in a small town, so we drive at least an hour to do any kind of shopping or to go to the doctor (although we don’t do that very often).
Since we do so much traveling, we want to be sure we get the best gas mileage we can for the size of car that we need! Nothing ruins a good road trip like overspending on gas!
Cars.com is THE place to go when you’re looking for a new family car, because they’re going to give you all the info in one place! You can see their summary of the car (like the image above), and if you’re still interested, you can see the specific details, as well.
In addition, the website allows you to search for cars for sale in your area, sell your old car, schedule service, or even learn how to do your own repairs on your car! Talk about a one-stop shop!
What are some other things you look for in a family car? Have you ever done research on Cars.com?
